Overview

A creative life.

Dora Pejačević developed her musical life between Croatia and the cities of Central Europe. She studied in Zagreb and briefly in Dresden and Munich, while much of her development came through independent work and contact with artists and writers. Her family home in Našice remained an important point of connection, even as her music travelled beyond Croatia. The Symphony in F-sharp minor became a central orchestral statement, composed in 1916–17 and substantially revised in 1920. It offers an expansive entrance to a composer whose ambitions extended beyond the intimate scale of the drawing room.

Cultural context

Croatian musical life and Central European late-Romantic concert culture.

Musical Language

Musical Language

Her music grows from late-Romantic harmony and formal design, with impressionistic colouring and a rich orchestral palette. The Symphony places dramatic momentum, sustained lyricism and sharply contrasted movement characters within a four-movement structure. Listen for changes in orchestral colour as well as the larger trajectory: its scale is matched by carefully shaped instrumental detail.[1][2][3]
