Margaret Bonds connected concert performance, composition and education with the Black artistic communities around her. Raised in Chicago in a musical household, she studied with Florence Price and William Dawson and later pursued a professional life in New York and Los Angeles. Her collaboration with Langston Hughes brought poetry into song and larger vocal forms. The Montgomery Variations carries that engagement into orchestral music, drawing a spiritual melody through responses to the civil-rights struggle. Her works invite attention both to their social imagination and to the distinctive craft with which she shaped voices and instruments.
