Overview

A creative life.

Olga Neuwirth works across concert music, opera, film and installation. Born in Graz, she studied in Vienna and San Francisco, where visual art and film also became part of her education. Her collaborations with writers and performers frequently bring live music into contact with electronics and images. Rather than treating these media as separate worlds, her projects make their interaction part of the artistic question. Orlando, based on Virginia Woolf, and the piano work locus...doublure...solus offer different scales of encounter with a practice concerned with unstable identities, shifting perspectives and the possibilities of sound.

Austrian and international contemporary music; practice connecting sound, film, literature and visual art.

Musical Language

Musical Language

Neuwirth often sets familiar instrumental identities in unfamiliar surroundings. In locus...doublure...solus, a sampler doubles and alters the solo piano’s sonic world, while microtonal relationships and sharply changing gestures unsettle the ensemble around it. Her wider practice joins live players, electronics and visual media, using changes of perspective and sound colour as active parts of musical form.[1][2][3]
