Overview

A creative life.

Pauline Viardot’s life joined the work of a singer, pianist and composer with an active role in nineteenth-century musical culture. Born in Paris into the García family, she became a meeting point for performers, writers and composers, while also creating music of her own. Her chamber opera Cendrillon brings theatrical invention into the scale of a salon: seven voices and a piano carry a familiar story through an intimate musical setting. Hearing this work alongside her songs offers a way to encounter the composer within an artistic life too often remembered primarily through the achievements of those around her.

Viardot’s writing grows from close knowledge of the singing voice and the dramatic possibilities of small-scale performance. Cendrillon sets character, lyrical melody and comic situation within an intimate piano-supported theatre. Rather than equating a small ensemble with a narrow expressive range, listen for how vocal contrast and pacing distinguish its characters and keep the familiar story in motion.[1][2][3]
