Overview

A creative life.

Yoko Shimomura’s music accompanies worlds that listeners enter through play. A pianist trained at Osaka Junior College of Music, she worked at Capcom and then Square before becoming a freelance composer. Her work includes music for Street Fighter II, Super Mario RPG, the Kingdom Hearts series and Final Fantasy XV. The scale can range from an intimate piano theme to music heard in orchestral performance. In 2025, BAFTA recognized her contribution to games with its Fellowship, bringing wider attention to a long and varied composing practice.

Musical Language

Musical Language

Shimomura combines melodic directness with a sensitivity to character and dramatic setting. Classical piano training and a strong sense of the recurring musical loop inform a vocabulary that can be gentle or forceful. Dearly Beloved offers a quiet point of entry, while her broader catalogue also includes rhythmically driven and orchestral writing.[2][1]
